President Jenny Cherry chaired the February 25 monthly meeting of the Tinonee Historical Society which was attended by eight members. The meeting opened with a minutes silence to former resident, Roslyn Bird who recently passed away.
Members were brought up to date with the progress of the paved area in the back garden over which it is hoped to erect a shade cover and the preparation of the display area in the machinery shed. With all the wet weather of late, the work has been somewhat slowed but is getting there.
The rain has certainly been welcomed but the weeds have multiplied and the grounds even had a huge crop of mushrooms. This year we even got a nice crop of grapes, which one of the members made into jam.
The members are gearing up for their next garage sale which has been set down for Saturday March 27 in the grounds of the Museum commencing at 8am and this will be their first major fundraiser for 2021.
A booking has been received from a local seniors group planning to visit the Museum on March 17, which incidentally is St Patrick's Day.
The Society has submitted an article for The Shine Festival which this year will be an online venture run by Kevin Williams, unlike last year's when the members set up a huge display of items in the Tinonee Memorial Hall. So much has changed due to the restrictions that COVID-19 has placed on such events.
Council clean up
Quite a number of residents are availing themselves of the council clean up and this year I have noticed a lot of bicycles in the rubbish piles - in the past it was barbecues - and metal items. Thanks to council for helping locals dispose of their unwanted rubbish in the correct way and not dumping it.
Passing of William (Bill) Mitchell
Deepest sympathy is extended to Roslyn Mitchell and family on the passing of husband and father Bill on February 25. Bill and Roslyn lived at Willina for many years before moving to Wingham and I got to known them when Roslyn joined as a member of Wallamba CWA in 2003. Bill's funeral service will be held today at the Manning Great Lakes Crematorium commencing at 10am and will included a tribute from the RSL.
