Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council manager of projects and engineering has confirmed Port Macquarie firm King and Campbell has been awarded the contract to create a master plan for the CBD.
The work will tie in with existing roadworks that are seeing upgrades to Farquhar Street, Primrose Street, Isabella Street and Bent Street.
It is believed the new master plan will offer a creative vision to complement the current engineering program to improve the road surfaces.
"They'll be looking at things like street furniture and plantings and will offer advice on such things as blisters (curb extensions), seats, bins and greenery," Mr Pattison said.
"We will definitely be replacing the footpath in Bent and Isabella Streets too."
The master plan will encompass an area from Cedar Party Creek Bridge through to Isabella and Bent Streets and will include parts of Farquhar Street and Primrose Street.
King and Campbell will of course have to allow for the Cedar Party Creek Bridge to be replaced at some point in the future and therefore work around it in their design.
The community has been waiting a long time for a significant upgrade to the CBD. Plans were drawn up at least 10 years ago but never brought to fruition.
Mr Pattison assures the concepts and ideas raised by the community previously will form the basis of the new plan with some fresh input by the landscape architects.
MidCoast Council didn't confirm the budget for the upgrade but Mr Pattison indicated there is money set aside for the project.
The preliminary master plan is scheduled to be released in late October with all planning expected to be finalised in early 2021.
The community may have to wait another two to three years however for all work to be completed.
