The announcement on Saturday, March 14 comes just a day after Prime Minister Scott Morrison advised against organised non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people due to the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Elaine admits the decision wasn't taken lightly and the Wingham Show Society committee consulted with the Agricultural Show Council and member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie's office before making the final decision on Saturday.
"The big big thing is the health, safety and well being of everyone involved," Elaine said.
"It is our job to protect people and we cannot guarantee that the people coming through the gates will be safe."
Elaine issued a statement for the community after Saturday's special committee meeting.
"We were so excited to be able to present a fabulous three day show for you all.
"To say that our committee is devastated, is an understatement."
The 2020 Wingham Show was scheduled to be held on from March 20-22 at Wingham Showgrounds.
Over the past 12 months the show committee has built strong working relationships with sponsors, stewards, competitors, exhibitors, key stakeholders and volunteers.
"We appreciate your understanding and patience as we undertake the task, over the next few days, of contacting everyone and we want to thank our community for their ongoing support," said Elaine.
"We will be working closely with our stewards to get this message out to competitors and exhibitors. This is a mammoth job. If our sponsors feel the need to contact us, please email us on winghamshowsociety@hotmail.com.au."
Many other local events are expected to also be impacted as organisers rally to minimise the spread of COVID-19.
On Friday it was announced that the 2020 Wingham Beef Week will be a carcase only competition with all activities planned to be held at the Wingham Showground cancelled. A full statement can be found on the Wingham Beef Week Facebook page.
A meeting is being held on Monday in Gloucester to discuss the fate of the upcoming Gloucester Show.
