Mount George and Lansdowne Public Schools have both secured a grant towards building and sustaining a greener future as recipients in the latest round of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.

The schools were selected out of close to 1000 applicants in the national program, which launched last year and aims to inspire students with hands-on environmental projects.
The program offers grants of up to $1000 for Australian primary schools and early learning centres across the country and focuses on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats.
The local grant will mean Mount George Public School can now able to develop a permaculture edibles garden.
The permaculture garden will combine native bush foods and edible perennials to compliment the current Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and aged mini orchard.
Lansdowne Public School will be enhancing biodiversity and habitats for a playground bird sanctuary.
The project aims to encourage more birds to the school grounds. The playground is already visited by lorikeets. To encourage more lorikeets and other native birds this grant will allow the school to plant a bird-attracting garden with nectar plants. They also plan to provide nesting boxes f a birdbath
"Getting hands-on with environmental projects at this early stage in their development will help equip students with the ability, knowledge and resources to take meaningful action to protect our shared local and national biodiversity as they grow up," Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish said.

Other schools that also received grants include Taree and District Preschool Ltd.
