Blackhead resident Hugh Smyth is currently at his grandmother's property at Blackbutt Drive, off Bullocky Way at Failford.
Although his grandmother has been evacuated, he and his step-father are staying on to prepare the house for the prospect of an approaching fire front.
But they're also not taking any chances.
"If it gets serious we'll be out of here," Mr Smyth said.
In spite of this, they're not facing any threat at the moment.
"There's nothing we can see at the moment," Mr Smyth said.
With the wind currently blowing from a nor-easterly direction and the fire still reportedly west of the Pacific Highway, Mr Smyth believed it would possibly stay that way.
He said residents from neighbouring properties had also remained and were taking general precautions, such as watering down their gardens and yards.
He said RFS crews had also stopped by to check in on people and advised them of what to do if the situation worsened.
He and his step-father father planned to evacuate to Tuncurry via Failford in the case of an emergency.
Currently the road is closed to incoming traffic but residents are allowed to evacuate.
Meanwhile, at Nabiac, Nabiac Hotel publican Matt Morris said around 100 people had evacuated to the town oval, which was serving as the official evacuation point.
He said the mood was fairly good among the community as people waited to see what would happen.
"As far as I can see it's (the fire) coming up behind Talawahl Mountain," he said.
He said the RFS had also been in town reassuring people and advising them what to do in case of an emergency.
Currently the Hillvile Fire is listed as out of control and has burnt approximately 20,000 hectares.
More to come as it develops.
