Hunter Local Land Services is holding a free drought management workshop at Coopernook on Tuesday, September 24 for livestock producers in the Manning Great Lakes.

It's been a tough winter and a dry start to spring and the HLLS team wants to ensure local producers are prepared and well equipped to make important property and livestock management decisions, if conditions do not improve.

"Unfortunately nearly 100 per cent of our region remains impacted by drought, with worsening feed gap issues and problems with water availability in the east of the region around Gloucester and the Upper Manning," said HLLS general manager Brett Miners.

"We understand the pressure many producers are under as they try to hand feed and meet energy requirements of their stock, especially those beginning calving or lambing or lactating.

"It is important to ensure you have a long term view when it comes to feed and water budgeting and you are testing feed to ensure its quality, and where possible selling excess stock to ease the workload and pressure on yourself and property."

The workshop will help producers get a better understanding of available local support services that can help them. Topics will include:

Livestock feed and pasture advice

Animal health information and advice

Latest financial assistance options for primary producers - drought transport subsidies, emergency water rebates & loans

Find out more about the DPI Rural Resilience program, the Rural Financial Counselling Service, and local mental health support services

The workshop is at Coopernook Hall and will run from 9am to 12pm.
