Taree police officers faced off with a community side at Purfleet Oval on Tuesday, July 9 for the annual touch football match.
The community side may have finished with a comfortable 7-1 win but according to Leonie Morcome, that's irrelevant.
"The game is about us all coming together to celebrate NAIDOC Week," Leonie explained.
"It's an all community event for everyone.
"We try and have some fun and engage with our local police in a friendly game of touch footy."
The community side had shades of their rugby league heroes Benji Marshall, Shaun Johnson and Taree's own Latrell Mitchell in their performance.
A blend of youth, skill, speed and agility was a recipe for success in this year's encounter.
A wrap around play down the left hand side opened the community side's account.
They backed it up moments later, splitting police defenders in the middle to break away and score.
Another opportunity soon after was unfortunately bombed metres from the tryline.
A quick roll-ball play midfield left defenders clutching at air as the community scored their third unanswered try. A bullet like pass out to the wing minutes later put the result beyond doubt.
The police did get on the board, only after the community side scored their fifth.
The community side scored twice in the second half to claim the win.
It's clear to see why the community has had the upper hand on police in the longstanding game.
"There's a lot of talent on display," Leonie said.
"We've got a couple of good local footballers there."
But at the end of the day, the result didn't matter one iota.
"It's just showing a bit of support for each other," Leonie said.
"Instead of showing the hard times that our people face, it's good to show that we can work together in a supportive game for our people."
Forster based officers will try their luck against the local community at Cabarita Flats on July 10.
There's still plenty more on the cards for NAIDOC Week in the Manning.
A community fun day will be held at Taree's Queen Elizabeth Park on July 10 from 11am.
Bushland Community Hub will be thumping on July 11. A youth disco will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm for juniors and 7.30pm to 9.30pm for high school students.
An awards night will be held at the Waterfront Function Centre on July 12 before the NAIDOC Fashion Show at the Winning Post Function Centre the following day.
