Last Wednesday's trip to Wingham for the NAIDOC celebration went off well. Tinonee School will have its own celebrations during the first week of Term 3 on Thursday, July 25.
Congratulations to student Lily Atkins who has been chosen to attend the Australian Primary School Championships in Victoria, a great opportunity to represent her school and the state. Tinonee School is organizing at raffle to assist Lily with funds to help defray some of her costs.
School reopens on July 22, for the teachers and staff, with the students returning for Term 3 the day after.
Peg Leg Bridge Progress
Thankfully the rain showers we have been receiving have not caused too much of a setback with the bridge work. Decking girders are installed and back fill done. It's all starting to look great.
I have been trying to compile a photo record of its progress as it is all part of our local history. I am sure all are counting down the days until the opening and we don't have to wait at the lights.
Rotary Car Boot Sale
It was much bigger than a car boot sale, taking up a lot of the Wingham Showground ring with farm machinery of all vintages and many other items. It was a little damp underfoot and there were light showers but hopefully it was a sell out.
We didn't stay long but enjoyed a tasty sausage sizzle from the Rotary barbecue.
Passing of Alan Sutherland
I received the sad news that Alan Sutherland passed away June 27. His funeral was in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Friday, July 5.
Alan, who was a brother of the late Dr Iain Sutherland, resided in Tinonee for a number of years with wife Vivien and sons Alex and Rod, who both attended Tinonee Public School.
During my trip to the UK in 2000, I had the pleasure of staying with Alan and Vivien and the boys (as they had returned to live in Scotland). They showed me around the area during my time with them.
Alan was one of the top 10 portrait painters in the UK in his lifetime.
Vale Ken Frost
Manning Great Lakes Memorial Gardens Chapel was overflowing with mourners who travelled long distances to pay their final respects to Kenneth 'Ken' Frost of Tinonee. He passed away on June 17 at age 73 and the funeral was on Friday, July 5.
Ken had led an interesting and very full life and was honoured with an RSL service conducted by members of Taree RSL, with donations in lieu of flowers going to Legacy.
Condolences are extended to Judy, children Alison and Todd and son Christopher (deceased), and his grandchildren and loving sister Judith.
