The cubs made lanterns to take along to the Winter Solstice Lantern Walk, modelled on one made last year by Manning River Turtle Conservation group member, Clare Rourke.
"They made little heads, they made the feet, they put googly eyes on them. And some of them got to make tails - they made a long tail for a male, and a short tail for a female. So they got to learn a little bit about the biology of the Manning River turtle," said cub leader, Kerrie Guppy.
"They were very excited to learn a bit more about them, and they take a lot of pride making them."
After the children finished making the lanterns, they went outside and found sticks to them. Then came an extra scout-related lesson - teaching them how to attach the lanterns to the sticks using a clove hitch.
Once the lanterns were completed, the night culminated with the lights in the scout hall being turned off, and the lights in the lanterns being turned on.
"It was a lot of fun. The cubs loved it. They were really engaged. They love crafts, because they're at that age - cubs are aged eight to 11 years old," Kerrie said.
"Thank you to Clare from the Manning River Turtle Conservation Group. It was great that she came to help," Kerrie said.
