Ken Grieve is doing a lovely charitable deed - giving away sets for free, but requests that they go to kids in need.
And they need to go fast - what isn't given away before Saturday, May 25 will be sold at a garage sale that day.
"I can give up to 20 tool sets, preferably to teenagers who are in need. " Ken said.
"They're not new tools; they're second hand tools but they're still usable.
"Generally we're doing it for charitable work. I have done some for several boys in the church who have no dad, so I helped them out there. I recently did some to go to a mission family in Mozambique that's quite extensive," Ken said
Ken is 92 ("in a couple of months") years old, and he and his wife, Elaine, are moving from their home at Old Bar into a retirement home in Taree, necessitating a paring down of their possessions.
Ken is a collector and has amassed a huge amount of tools, amongst other things (he has a scrapbook containing every one of his school reports since he started school in 1932, and a very large collection of porcelain electric jugs). He can't take the tools with him to his new home.
"I've always liked tools. We've been up here now for 28 years and just after I arrived here I joined a collectors club. And as well as that I got involved with market stalls for the (Taree Baptist) church building fund. We're very public minded people and like helping people," Ken said.
He would stash tools he had bought somewhere under a counter, forget about them, and go buy more to sell at the church market stall, meaning the collection grew and grew.
"I've got a bad memory," Ken laughed.
Ken and Elaine have spent a life helping others, particularly through their involvement with the Baptist church, starting down in Sydney.
Ken asks that people wishing to find out more about the tool kits call him on 6553 7449.
"If they could ring me - they won't have much time before the sale - and make an appointment to come here, and I can sort it out with them what tools they would like," Ken asked.
The garage sale is taking place at Casuarina Place, Old Bar on Saturday, May 25 from 8am to 3pm.
