The Wingham Spinners and Craft Group is holding an exhibition titled Oceans and Environs that aims to showcase group members' artisan works.
"We've made a collection of fine works of members of this group. There's a whole range of things, all in weaving, textiles, spinning, and jewellery," group member Vivienne Scott said.
Forget crocheted and knitted baby clothes and everyday scarves - these works are crafted and handmade with artisan techniques.
Nuno felting (a time consuming method of creating felt fabric by bonding fibre with lightweight gauze or silk, for instance), and other types of felting; weaving, including 'wild weaving' incorporating found natural objects; freeform crochet (scrumbling) and more; are all used to produce scarves and shawls, garments, hats, and stitched artworks and wall hangings. And there is one cheeky crocheted boat.
Group members have been working on producing items for the exhibition since the beginning of the year. They have interpreted the 'ocean' them with colour and shape, and in one instance, using 'sea silk' as yarn.
A lot of the works being exhibited are for sale at the Gallery. Items for sale but not sold will be for sale at the Manning Made Artisan's Fair, on Sunday June 2 at the Taree PCYC, at the Spinners and Craft Group stall, or individual members stalls.
Other carefully selected artisans from the MidCoast region will be displaying their wares on the day.
Oceans and Environs is deliberately being exhibited ahead of the Manning Made Artisans fair, as a taster of some of the artisan work that will be exhibited at the fair.
Oceans and Environs is on exhibition until Sunday, May 26 at Manning Regional Art Gallery in Macquarie Street, Taree.
