There is a new mural in town - the first of a collection that will hopefully make a talking point of Wingham and be a drawcard for out of town visitors.
Bessie the cow graces a lower part of a wall on Bent on Life's shop front.
The artwork is the creation of Taree artist Chloe Hargreaves, who is responsible for the Zentangle wall at Townhead Fruit and Veg in Taree.
Bent on Life and Bent on Food proprietor, Donna Carrier has always had a vision of Wingham becoming a 'mural and street art town'. There is a laneway running down the side of Bent on Life that already has an old mural painted on the side wall, sparking Donna's idea initially.
She hopes to see murals bring more tourists into town.
"I spend a lot of time in Melbourne. When you go to Melbourne, it’s the (murals in the) lanes, in Lismore it’s the lanes. It becomes something that people go looking for," Donna said.
"And it just broadens the town so that there’s more things to see - so you’re wandering the streets, you’re walking down little lanes, having a look at murals, having your photo taken with interactive art."
By interactive art, Donna means murals such as wings, or balloons, in front of which people stand and have their photos taken.
In a stroke of serendipity, Chloe recently sent out a bulk email to cafe and business owners up and down the coast, offering her services as a mural artist. Donna was quick to snatch up Chloe's offer.
Donna and Chloe are now in the process of planning a big mural down the back of the Bent on Life laneway that will incorporate interactive aspects.
In the meantime, Chloe will be painting another mural on the front of Bent on Life on Saturday afternoon, this one being a leafy vine.
Wingham Chamber of Commerce also has funds set aside for creation of a mural in Wingham which will start in mid March, weather permitting. That mural will run the length of 16 metres along the laneway next to the newsagents. The artist will be children's book author and illustrator, Stephen Michael King and expectations are that it will have a whimsical flavour.
The Stephen Michael King mural is being funded by the Wingham Place Making Strategy funds, which only allows for the one mural.
"However, we're hoping this will be the starting point for more to happen," Chamber president, Liz Jarvis said.
Donna Carrier agrees.
“I wouldn’t mind trying to get some more funding for continued murals in Wingham after (Chamber of Commerce) have exhausted their funding," Donna said.
