Plasma is a sought after component of blood for many people across Australia so the team at Taree Blood Bank has put a call out to new donors to roll up their sleeves.
With about 1500 active blood donors in the Taree area, the centre is hopeful of adding 250 new people in 2019 to meet the demand for the product.
Blood Bank spokesperson Jemma Falkenmire outlined the importance of the blood centre stocking up on supplies.
“Plasma is really important for many patients, including cancer, trauma and new mums,” Ms Falkenmire said.
“Each donation helps treat people suffering serious burns or cancer, protects people with brain or blood disorders and protects kids against chicken pox.”
Ms Falkenmire said those who donate plasma and blood help thousands of Australians enjoy an improved quality of life.
“Donating plasma is simple. Just sit back and relax on a comfy couch for 45 minutes while you donate,” Ms Falkenmire said.
“The whole appointment takes one and a half hours and you can donate as often as every two weeks.”
It’s been a busy summer at the Taree centre, with about 700 donors walking through the doors in December and January.
“We were able to meet the needs of hospitals over the Christmas period, thanks to the generosity of the community,” Ms Falkenmire said.
During the period, 50 new donors rolled up their sleeves for the first time.
“Given less than three per cent of the population donate, these new donors were critical in helping save three lives,” Ms Falkenmire said.
