Prolific local historical writer, Bill Beach has authored a new book, Wingham Municipal Council’s Housing Scheme 1954-1980.
The book was launched at Wingham Museum on Tuesday, January 29.
“Between 1954 and 1980 Wingham Municipal Council commenced its Housing Scheme to provide low cost, and readily available, finance for local residents,” Manning Valley Historical Society member Carol Pammer said at the launch.
“This trail blazing scheme would be hugely successful. In the 26 years up until 1980 almost 400 new Wingham homes were financed under the scheme. That is around one in five homes that are in Wingham today.”
He brought the theory of housing loan schemes with him from Warren, and from that little acorn, big things grew.
- Alan Carlyle
The Wingham Municipal Council Housing Scheme was born in 1954 When Robert Love OAM was appointed Town Clerk.
“He brought the theory of housing loan schemes with him from Warren, and from that little acorn, big things grew,” said Alan Carlyle, who was the Mayor of Wingham from 1963 to 1970.
The housing scheme ceased to exist in 1980 when Wingham Municipal Council was amalgamated into the former Greater Taree City Council.
The book is for sale at the Wingham Museum for $14.00.
