They are front rower Barrie ‘Carrots' Morrison and halfback/five-eighth Gary Bridge. Gloucester’s Keith Tull and former Group Three chief executive Barrie Smith were the other inductees.
The well-travelled Morrison started his career with Taree Old Bar before moving to Newcastle club Macquarie United in 1966. He had a brief stint with St George in 1970 before returning to Group Three in 1972. The following year he signed with Wingham and played for the Tigers in 1978 and 1982. He retired, aged 37, after the 1982 grand final. Morrison also represented Newcastle against a touring New Zealand side and North Coast.
Bridge had only one year with the Tigers – in 1981. However, it was one of the most significant in his career. He made the switch from United, where he was a club junior, to link with his older brother Wayne, now the Group Three chairman. Daryl Palmer was Wingham’s captain-coach that year and he had connections with the Balmain Tigers, where he had previously played. It was through this that Bridge signed with Balmain. He notched 102 first grade games with Balmain from 1982 to 1986 before signing with Eastern Suburbs. He returned to Taree in 1991.
Bridge also represented Country Seconds on the wing in 1981.
A team-mate from his Balmain days, international prop Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach, was the special guest at at the hall of fame induction.
Keith Tull returned to Gloucester in 1951 after earlier representing Country Firsts and captaining Riverina against a touring Great Britain side. He was with the Magpies for seven years, missing just one game and steering Gloucester, the premierships in the then Group 18 competition, in 1954 and 1957. He is credited for paving the way for Gloucester’s golden run in Group 18 during the 1960s when the club dominated the competition. He was represented at the function by his son, Denis.
Barrie Smith was a former Wauchope player who also turned out for Brewarrina in Group 15 and was selected in the Western Division side to meet France in 1964, but was forced to withdraw because of injury. He also played in New Guinea before retiring in 1972.
He then became a referee in the Hastings League and Group Three competitions, although it is in administration where Smith made his biggest impact. Smith was elected to the Group Three executive in 1983 and served until standing down last year.
He was at various times president, treasurer and chief executive (formerly secretary).
