The artworks have resulted from an art therapy class for veterans and Australian Defence Force personnel who are using art to help them battle depression and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
Jillian is a former police officer who sustained a serious injury to her right arm which later necessitated its amputation.
Jillian, who was already an artist, had to retrain herself to paint using her left hand. She found such benefits from her art that she approached fellow artist Ron Hindmarsh to help set up the art therapy classes so many more people could benefit.
The class currently has nine participants and the results have been quite amazing, with some wonderful artworks being produced and the therapeutic benefits are very evident.
The Art and Soul classes are held each fortnight at St Matthew’s Church Hall in Bent Street, Wingham from 9am to noon. The cost is $5 per class. For more information call Ron Hindmarsh on 6553 1203.
The art exhibition can be viewed at Taree Craft Cottage on the corner of High and Pulteney streets, Taree between 9.30am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9.30am to 1pm Saturdays until the end of January. Entry is free. Enquiries to Pam on 6552 5552.
