Wingham is no exception and has a deep connection with historical pubs and hotels, but most of this information was hard to find… until now!
A project from the Australian National University (ANU) Archives has brought the history of Wingham and surrounds online for the community to enjoy.
The ANU Archives has a new online exhibition showcasing the history of Tooth and Company, a significant New South Wales brewer, and the many hotels it owned and supplied throughout the state.
They include Wingham pubs the Australian Hotel, and the Wingham Hotel, which went up in flames in 2011.
Other Manning Valley pubs in the exhibition are the Bushland Tavern, Exchange Hotel, Fotheringhams Hotel, and Royal Hotel in Taree, and the Manning River Hotel in Chatham.
This exhibit is available online along with a special interactive map, providing access to valuable historical information, as well as incredible photographs.
The ANU Archives has access to additional images and records on most of the hotels.
The online exhibition links to all the records located in the ANU Open Research repository, which are available for users to view and download.
For any questions regarding the rights and usage of photographs, or for more information, please contact the ANU Archives at butlin.archives@anu.edu.au
ANU is committed to making important collections such as these available online, as it provides access to world-class resources to the broader community.
