The bike riders visited the school as it was on the itinerary for the 2018 Variety Postie Bike Dash.
The Dash is a six day charity ride through NSW to raise funds for Variety – the Children’s Charity, with participants all riding Honda CT110 postie bikes.
It’s not the first time the school has hosted the Postie Dash riders – they visited Nowendoc Public School four years ago, but back then there were only 21 postie bikes.
The school, which boasts five students and three parents (one of whom couldn’t attend as she was working) provided a lunch of cold meats and salads for the crowd of riders.
“Luckily I have a very nice husband who loves food and cooking. He supervised another parent and the two of them prepared it all!” teaching principal Kathy Bourke said.
After lunch, the riders played a game of “unique” cricket with the Nowendoc students, parents and staff.
The aforementioned Postman Pat had a special role – collecting mail to deliver to children elsewhere. On the back of his bike he carried a postbox.
“The children here had made cards with messages for kids at John Hunter and Newcastle Hospitals,” Kathy said.
“It’s part of our values learning, service learning, give back to other people.
“And then they posted their cards into Postman Pat’s mailbox and he will deliver them to the children.”
The parade of postie bike riders left around 2.30pm.
“It was a great day,” Kathy said.
