In the past 12 months they have gone through two tragedies involving two fellow members. Added to this, in August this year four brigade members were involved in a truck rollover during an out of control fire, with two members requiring hospitalisation.
So when the annual RFS Get Ready Day came along, the brigade decided to hold an event to boost their morale and raise funds for much needed equipment.
‘Feet on Fire’, a community fun walk, took place on September 23 with the brigade and the community coming together for the event.
Eleven people took part in the 12 kilometre walkathon, ending at the fire station.
“There was 11 of us that walked, but we had a lot of people that came down to our shed, because we had a cake stall, so we had a whole heap of people there cheering us on when we arrived. It was just lovely, it really was,” Lyn Heher, the brigade’s training officer said.
“We raised a great amount of money which means we’re going to be able to purchase the things that we need for our fire brigade. We’re getting some PMR radios for the fire truck and the shed just so that we have better communication, and a few other pieces of equipment.
Lyn and the rest of the brigade want to say a “big thank you” to the Caparra and Wherrol Flat community who supported them and walked with them.
“It’s lifted the brigade’s morale, because sometimes you feel that you get a bit forgotten about until someone needs you, and your not appreciated until you needed. It showed that the community appreciates the sacrifices that we put ourselves through to help our community,” Lyn said.
“We really appreciate their support.”
