CLEAVERS Tyres, Wingham, is one of the town’s most trusted businesses thanks to its long history of service to the Upper Manning.
The business can be traced back to the 1950s, when it was first operated as Browns Tyre Service at the same site in Primrose Street by Gordon Cleaver.
The backbone of the business has always been the valley’s farms and rural businesses.
Current owner Ashley Cleaver (Gordon’s son) knows this community well thanks to his family’s long association with life on the land.
The Cleaver family first settled in the Manning Valley at Kundibakh in the 1850s where they ran a dairy farm.

Although the business has watched the decline of the dairy industry, its customer base has been sustained in recent years by the rise in hobby farms.
“Servicing the rural community is still the fundamental strength of the business,” Ashley said.
As well as farms, Cleavers provides strong service to those who live in town.
The team can help you out with any type of tyre – be it for a tractor, a car or a wheelbarrow.
“That’s the beauty of a rural store,” Ashley said.
“This variety means our team is better skilled.”

Cleavers, Wingham, is run by a team of six: master mechanic Kevin Kolhback, tyre technicians Michael Bush and Wayne Hardes, manager Ben Wilmen, relieving manager Pat Turner and owner Ashley Cleaver, who moves between the Taree and Wingham stores.
Ashley works in the Wingham store two hours every weekday. Before heading back to Taree with stock from the Wingham warehouse, he checks on his photographic studio in Farquhar Street which he uses after hours and on weekends to promote community organisations.
Although smaller than the Taree Cleavers, the Wingham store has the access to the same high quality range of products, competitive prices and up-to-the-minute technologies that has made the business so reliable.
The Wingham store differs in that it has a strong emphasis on the rural sector.
It provides an on-farm service where tyre technicians travel out to outlying properties in areas such as Elands and Krambach and everywhere in between.
