Members of the Tinonee Friendship Group met at the Tinonee Memorial Hall last Wednesday July 4 for a cuppa and chat before they car pooled to head for their latest outing to Halliday’s Point where they had a look around before enjoying a delicious and relaxed lunch at the Halliday’s Point Tavern.

The group is open to anyone over 55 years and they meet every first Wednesday in the month at the Hall and often enjoy outings to places of local interest.  For further details contact Judy Cluss on 6553 1450.

Tinonee Public School News

Term one has ended and all are now enjoying their holidays and a well earned break.  The big news is that Ms Karen Austin has been appointed to the school as the new principal taking on the role from Mrs Joanne Elliott who has been relieving principal.

Everyone is reminded that the school grounds are out of bounds during school holidays and anyone found on the grounds will be prosecuted.  

It is disappointing to learn that the weekend of June 29/30 the school was the target of vandalism, should we see anything suspicious we must report it immediately to the authorities.

Students from the school had a fantastic day at Wingham High School with a huge variety of activities celebrating NAIDOC Week.  The students also enjoy special visitors from Harrington Public School on Thursday.

Canteen manager Michelle thanks everyone for their efforts in the canteen during term one but as always would love to hear from new volunteers to assist with its operation.  The canteen menu exceeds the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy requirements of 75 per cent - congratulations on all Michelle’s hard work to make this happen.

Passing of Peter John ‘Banjo’ Burke

John and I attended the funeral of Peter Burke, a distant relative of John, at the Manning Great Lakes Memorial Chapel on Thursday July 5 which was overflowing with family, relatives and friends.

Peter was the son of Thomas and Marjorie Burke of Cundle Flat and was born July 5, 1950 and would have celebrated his 68th birthday the day of his funeral. 

Peter was from a large family who are left to mourn his passing including wife Marie.  The funeral service was conducted by Jenny Medland with eulogies given on Peter’s life by his nephews Craig Burke and David Dunn and a poem read by his daughter Donna.   Peter’s own written and recorded song “Remember Me Darling” accompanied a pictorial presentation on Peter’s life, which brought many a tear from those in attendance.

Mr Bob Coombes of Taree RSL Sub Branch and Club Taree delivered the RSL tribute and fellow members formed a guard of honour at the conclusion of the service.

Rest in Peace Peter, you will be missed by many.
