Earlier this year local artists Ron Hindmarsh and Jillian Oliver started art classes for current and former Australian Defence Forces and emergency personnel as a form of therapy for PTSD and physical ailments.

After hearing of the group, Pam and Allan Eyb of the Taree Craft Centre approached Ron and Jillian and offered space to display works by the group.
“Although the group is new they have been working hard to learn and show their skills. So naturally we decided to accept this kind offer,” Jillian said.
“The group is proud of their work and happy to display it to encourage others in need. They are quick to tell you how much they look forward to each class and what it offers.”
Jillian is a former police officer who sustained a serious injury to her arm which later necessitated its amputation. She has used, and is still using, art as therapy.
Using art as a therapuetic tool for veterans is becoming increasingly popular, and is known to assist in dealing with PTSD.
The Art and Soul Display will be held at the Taree Craft Cottage, corner Pulteney and High Streets Taree. It is open between 9.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday.
‘Art and Soul’ classes are held on fortnightly Thursdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm at St Matthews Church in Bent Street, Wingham. Cost is $5 which goes towards morning tea and hall hire.
No artistic ability is required, and Jillian encourages those who do not think they are artistic to come along and try it anyway.
