NSW Minister for Heritage Gabrielle Upton visited Wingham Library on Wednesday, May 30 to inspect the $70,000 restoration works of the heritage listed library.

Joining Minister Upton was Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead and MidCoast Council mayor David West.
“The Heritage Near Me grant has ensured we are able to conserve and protect this building for future generations,“ Mr Bromhead said.
“The Victorian style Wingham School of Arts was built in 1907 and has housed the library since 1958; these works will ensure this grand old lady stands strong for many years to come.”
In late 2016, $70,000 was awarded through a Heritage Near Me grant to MidCoast Council to give life to under utilised areas of Wingham Library. The grant funded the repainting of the children’s reading room and much of the upper floor.
Ms Upton said that the restoration of the Wingham Library was an investment not just preserving the structure, but a symbol within a community.
“I’m proud to be in Wingham today to see the results of the State government’s work to preserve treasured pieces of our regional community’s heritage,” Ms Upton said.
“Local libraries are focal point for regional towns, and Wingham is no exception. I saw the primary school as I arrived, and having seen the restoration today I have no doubt students will take advantage of the space for generations to come” said Ms Upton.
“The grant has allowed council to make structural repairs, painting of the exterior and interior, replacing flooring in the kitchen and install public seating outside, Cr West said .
“Working with local residents and community groups we identified the need for a new meeting room at the library and with the support of our local member and this grant we have been able to plan and construct this facility.”
Taree and the Great Lakes have received over $250,000 to preserve the region’s community heritage since 2011.
