Twenty five participants got involved and removed madeira vine, lantana and other weeds along Brown’s Creek in the vicinity of Taree Showgrounds.
One hundred and fifty trees were planted to replace the weeds that were removed.
Manning Landcare has sourced funds from NSW Environmental Trust to assist with the management of the riparian zone along Browns Creek.
“The site has improved so much that native trees are getting well established and the weeds are getting less,” Alison said.
“It has taken a lot of work to get it to this stage; some of the weeds are really persistent as there is a large seed bank in the ground. The madeira vine grows up the trees and smothers them if it is not kept under control. The riparian zone now is healthy enough to create an environment for many self seeded tree seedlings to occur.
“Whilst we were planting people were coming along and commenting how there is now great bird life and they quite often see fish in Browns Creek,” Alison said.
