Wingham Fire Station will be open from 10am to 2pm and families can go along, meet their local firefighters, and learn more about home fire safety and fire prevention.
A range of free activities will be on offer including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and fire safety presentations. Firefighters will also be able to provide advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and preparing a home fire escape plan.
“We’ve had an upgrade of the station, so we have a whole new station so if anyone wants to have a look inside we can show them,” said Wingham brigade captain David O’Donnell.
Children will be able to see the fire engines and firefighting equipment up close – always a highlight of this much-anticipated day as they can grab the opportunity to have their photo taken in a truck or with a firefighter, or both.
They’ll also be able to take home a Brigade Kids activity booklet, which teaches them vital fire safety lessons, and other giveaways, such as helmets, temporary tattoos, stickers and Keep Looking While Cooking wooden spoons, for the culinary-minded.
Wingham firefighters are providing a barbecue for visitors, and will also be giving firefighting demonstrations.
David said FRNSW firefighters, who are amongst the most highly trained in the world, do so much more than just fight fires.
“This year we are reminding people about the wide range of our capabilities,” David said.
“From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to education, prevention and humanitarian relief, across the state, across the country and even overseas, our firefighters are prepared for anything, anywhere, anytime.”
David said Open Day is a great opportunity to talk to the experts about making homes fire-safe ahead of winter.
“Why not come along to Wingham Fire Station this Open Day and hear about all the things we do in the community.
“In addition, Wingham are recruiting and if someone is Interested in joining this is a great way to find out if you would like to become a firefighter,” he said.
Wingham Fire Station is at Farquhar Street, Wingham.
