The Charolais/Belted Galloway cross steer has been donated by Merv and Beth Presland of Bekadan Belted Galloway and Charolais Stud of Mount George, west of Wingham.

The Preslands, who retired to their Mount George farm from Sydney, have previously donated two other steers to charity before moving to the Manning Valley from Castle Hill.

Merv was reluctant to comment on this generosity but did tell Wingham Beef Week organisers that thankfully none of his family, close friends or neighbours have had to call on the rescue helicopter service which they see flying over from time to time.  

“Beth and I have had a fortunate life and I guess it’s like everything, if everyone just gives a little, whether it be an animal, time or whatever we can then all can benefit from it if the need arises.”

Put another way, Merv added “put something into the pot and when your time of need comes around you hope there is something in the pot for you.”

Bidding at the auction is to purchase the live steer with abattoir processing costs being donated by Wingham Beef Exports. Scott Kelly of Wingham Gourmet Meats and Chicken will donate his services to cut and package the beef for the purchaser at no cost also.

The purchase of the steer will be supporting the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, which has become an essential part of country life.

The charity auction steer is currently being prepared on feed supplied by Ridley’s Taree.
