Its working bee begins at 9am on March 25 and volunteers are needed to prepare the garden beds and plant new crops. It’s a family friendly event that runs for about three hours, says co-ordinator Bree Katsamangos, and she says weeding will be a little easier after so much rain. 

Bree says that in addition to the routine garden maintenance tasks volunteers will prepare the garden beds for planting.

“Summer is tough on the garden, so much so we decided to not plant summer crops between December and February.

“Keeping them alive in the blistering heat and getting a good product is just too hard. Instead, we elected to rest the beds, keeping them composted and moist to maintain the quality of the soil in readiness for autumn planting.”

Bree says there is a lovely community of regular volunteers and invites anyone to come to the garden to take part on Sunday.

“Come along, bring sun protection, wear sturdy enclosed shoes and bring a good supply of water. Bring a mug as well and we can share a cuppa and something to eat in the break. This is a family friendly event and children are welcome.”

Taree Community Garden holds regular working bees on the fourth Sunday of each month from 9am to 12pm.  The garden is located at 80 Wynter Street, at the rear of the block opposite the Aldi car park entrance.
