How is 2018 treating you so far? Are you living up to your New Year resolutions? I have noticed at least one local “artist” is. His/her latest effort between Mount George and Wingham is very neat with well constructed lettering and must have taken time. I presume it is not the work of young vandals from either of the towns as it’s about nine kilometres from Wingham and even further from here. They would surely not ride bicycles from town to deface property?

The safety signs near what we locals call Devil’s Elbow were defaced ages ago. One would think the drivers of council work trucks, road crews, garbage trucks and school buses would have noticed and remarked on their condition, but I see they have not been replaced – or have they have been defaced again!
When Wingham Council amalgamated with Taree Council I presume the ratepayers were promised a much better service, with better roads etc. Now Greater Taree has amalgamated with Gloucester and Great Lakes, so, I presume we should get a better type of local government.
I admit some roads are in better condition, and we make allowances for a backlog of problems with bridges and so on. Some things are being done and we thank council for those efforts. All it takes is time and consistent checking of road surfaces and bridges because people’s safety cannot just be left out of the picture. We cannot repair some of the damage caused by traffic accidents.
Locals know the winding parts of Nowendoc Road and most drive accordingly. What about the visiting public who use the road at holiday times? Many families tow caravans which they use only once or twice a year and are not as proficient as they might be doing so.
While local government is trying to improve conditions, nobody seems to be checking on the safety of those using the roads. One’s eyes go straight to the graffiti on the underpass near Killawarra as the writing faces the driver coming from Wingham and is about a metre high. Drivers need to be concentrate on driving at that S bend, not admire someone’s tags!
Do we not have a graffiti bus in the area which removes these tags? If not, surely there is someone on council who could do the job, just as there is someone who could check all the road sings so they can be fixed.
There there is what appears to be asbestos left on the roadside from where it must have fallen from a truck. Large sheets of plaster were removed but the rest remains, months later. Rain falls on it and it washes into the Manning River when we get a storm. We drive by and stir up the air, and our children on school buses go past twice a day and are exposed much more often.
