Now the Wingham branch of the Country Women’s Association is challenging the males of Wingham to don their aprons and outnumber the women in the kitchen.
The annual Wingham CWA shortbread baking competition is a much loved staple of Bonnie Wingham and CWA president Marcia Gilligan is keen to see more men taking part this year.
Held at the CWA building in Isabella Street on Friday June 2, the competition is open to anyone keen to prove their shortbread is the best.
Children are particularly encouraged to enter, and cooking for the event is something that can become an annual ritual between grandparent and grandchild.
All children entering get a ribbon with either the chance to get a first, second or third placing or an encouragement award.
Notices about the competition have been sent to all the local primary schools and Marcia is hopeful there will be plenty of entries this year.
The competition will be judged once again by RAS judge Jac Hyde of Wingham CWA.
Jac insists on a closed room while judging takes place to ensure the competition remains fair.
“I judge baking and flavour and it is important to know what the bottoms look like,” she said.
Jac will not know the names of any of the entrants, nor what they look like while she judges.
Once she has chosen her winners the CWA doors will swing open and the community will be warmly welcomed to come and buy the shortbread.
Sections
There are three sections in the competition:
- Scottish Shortbread with rice flour or ground rice
- Shortbread variations ie butter shortbread, flavoured shortbread, lemon, wholemeal etc
- School students
The competition is free to enter, entry forms are available from the Wingham Chronicle office, Wingham Museum and Bent on Food.
Entries accepted between 9am-11.30am on Friday June 2 at the CWA building on Isabella Street. Enquiries to Marcia on 6553 5723.
