“She teared up and gave me a big hug,” said store proprietor Sharelle Lewis of a local mum she gave $100 discount to.
Three lucky families were chosen by Sharelle to receive the bonus after local business woman Donna Carrier donated $300 to help a family with the cost of school uniforms.
The idea was inspired by the Wingham CWA.
For the past two years the big-hearted ladies at CWA have quietly donated $300 to each of the three local primary schools for a student entering year seven.
“I happened to be talking to Donna about this and she wanted to help,” said Sharelle.
Donna’s only instructions were for Sharelle to decide who would receive the gift.
Sharelle went home to think about it.
“I said to my husband, ‘how do I pick who gets it?’”
After a long hard think Sharelle decided it would be a good idea to split the money between three families.
Donna readily agreed and all Sharelle had to do was wait to surprise someone.
She didn’t have to wait long.
“A lady walked in with four children, three of them at school,” explained Sharelle.
“She said ‘we will have to get jumpers later,’ so I said ‘would $100 help?’”
Sharelle admits the experience made her feel good.
“It was just so rewarding,” she said.
Since then, another Wingham businesswoman has also been inspired to help.
Nicola Morton of Regional Geotechnical Solutions quickly matched the $300 donation when she heard about the idea.
“I thought it was a beautiful gesture,” said Sharelle.
“How good would it be if every business made a donation!”
Sharelle will be digging deep too.
She plans to contact Wingham High School to see if she can personally help a student going into year 10 with the cost of buying the new uniform required.
