Emily and Sarah’s farmstead is on Marrook Farm in Elands, where they are being mentored in all things farming and biodynamics by David and Heidi Marks. They moved up from the city in January and were straight into selling at the markets.
They sell Marrook Farm hard and soft cheese and yoghurt at all the local markets, as well as their own products – a tea and a coffee brewed kombucha, and a traditionally fermented sauerkraut. Sarah says theirs is one of the only coffee kombuchas for sale in Australia!
Ginger and Brown is all about inspiring people by showcasing great local flavours, and about supporting sustainable food production on a deeper level. “We’re getting involved in the food system in a more active way, not just as a passive consumer. We want to create change” said Sarah. “Our favourite thing is interacting with the customers, seeing them light up. It gets us excited when we see others excited about what we do!”
Emily and Sarah are passionate foodies from way back, and met through food blogging. Emily has a permaculture background and Sarah has taught fermentation for years, but both are new to farming. They are trying their hand at egg production and expanding their range of veggies. They know they are lucky to have David and Heidi as mentors. “We both really love their product and want to see it get more into the local area” said Sarah. “Dave and Heidi have so much passion for what they do, it’s contagious!” added Emily.
Emily and Sarah will be at the Wingham Farmers’ Market on Saturday July 2 from 8am until noon at the showground. You can also find more about them and follow their journey at gingerandbrown.com.au and on Facebook and Instagram @gingerandbrown.
