Orange was the host city for the GCA’s biennial National Convention on October 12-16, where affiliated garden clubs and related groups from across Australia come together to celebrate the organisation's motto ‘Friendship through gardens’.
The week included visits to gardens in Wellington, Bathurst, Orange, Canowindra, Millthorpe and the famous Cowra Japanese Gardens.
Guest speakers over the week included Mary Moody, Elizabeth Swane and Judy Horton.
“As a humble gardener from the NSW Mid North Coast, it is indeed a great honour the be elected president of the GCA and follow in the footsteps of so many inspirational and hardworking men and women," George stated in his acceptance speech.
"I’m excited and a little daunted by the challenges that lie ahead in my three year term as president, but more concerned about how my poor garden will survive my absences!”
The GCA is a national organisation with 700 affiliated garden clubs and related bodies, representing 50,000 members across Australia.
The president's role requires him to regularly attend garden club meetings, friendship days, seminars, rally’s and conventions of these clubs.
The primary role of the GCA is to extend the culture of gardening into the wider community for the benefit of all citizens, an aim that George will do his utmost to broadcast and implement over the next few years.
