The Men’s Shed was lucky to receive State government grants to complete projects under the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program to the value of $10,544.

This will be used to enclose an open verandah and to install solar panels.

“The members were over the moon when they heard they were successful in receiving the grant,” educator and mentor at the shed, Don Forbes said.

“Like any shed, it’s never big enough,” Bill Freeman said.

Bill explained the grant is enough money to enclose an open verandah to move benches and dusty machinery out of the main shed into their own area.

It will also isolate metal workers into their own section making the workspace safer.

The solar panels will offset rising power costs for the shed and help them be more sustainable.

The shed faces continuing rising costs with power, insurance and the replacement of machinery.

“We are all very grateful for the grant, and for Stephen Bromhead for supporting our application” Bill said.

The Men’s Shed work on jobs for the community and also sell their products. The men have been producing tables and chairs from scrap timber from Machin’s Mill which would otherwise be burnt. These are on display in Isabella Street and are for sale to the public.

The Men’s Shed is designed as a place for men of all ages to go to share skills, enjoy each others’ company and talk about men’s health issues.

The group currently has 28 members averaging 12 to 15 men working in the shed when it is open on Mondays and Thursdays.

They are currently looking for someone with a trade background to become a co-ordinator.

Bill said the shed always welcomes more members. Men can participate in their own projects or in projects for the community.

“Some men just come along for a cup of tea and a chat, “he said.
