After ‘the Remembrance Day debacle’ against Taree West when they were out for a competition low score of just 20, a rejuvenated Wingham posted the highest score to date of 4/304 before dismissing Rovers for 187.
The addition of man-of-the-match Dave Rees, and middle order bats Josh Davis and Ben Cole, made all the difference as Wingham piled on the runs at better than a run-a-ball.
Rees starred with 77 as he and Brad Staff (48) put on an opening stand of 104 before Staff was first dismissed with 4 sixes and 3 fours to his credit.
Rees was next to go with the score on 169, having struck 4 sixes and 7 fours himself.
Scowen again got a start but failed to cash in when caught for 38 with 192 on the board.
It didn’t take Davis long to hit his stride as he clubbed 9 boundaries on his way to 49 before he was run out with 262 on the board.
Cole started carefully, wise considering he hadn’t picked up a bat since last season, but soon found his rhythm to club 2 majors and 6 fours, finishing unbeaten on 56 from just 38 balls at the close.
A Broderick claimed two of the wickets taken by bowlers, returning 2/40, but Rovers didn’t help themselves, bowling 25 wides.
With a hefty tally to bowl at Rees (1/30) and Ryan Smoothy (1/18) proved effective early before Mick Stinson claimed 2 for’ to have Rovers 4/85 at the half way mark.
They lost a further wicket soon after before some innovative batting from the lower order pushed the total towards 200 as Scowen offered all his bowlers the chance to impress.
J Baldwin (35), J Korn (29), skipper Powick and Smith (27 each) boosted Rovers score to a respectable level.
Matt Essery finished top-wicket taker with 3/35 whilst Stinson returned 2/27 as all trundlers registered something in the wickets column.
Wingham return to Cedar Party Reserve this weekend against Port City Panthers.
In Second Grade Wingham fell 15 runs short of victory in their pursuit of Great Lakes tally of just 98 at Tuncurry.
A Hat-trick to Great Lakes bowler C Lewis and a couple of run-outs foiled Winghams’ chances of victory.
They get the chance to redeem themselves against United at Central Park this week.
Third Grade continued their good form with a win over Taree West at Cedar Party Reserve. 62 runs from Darryl Irvine laid the platform for Wingham to post 8/190 before dismissing Taree West for 125 with Mark ‘Sleepy’ Thompson winding back the clock, claiming 6/27.
Wingham also tackle United at Cundletown this Saturday.
