The annual Wingham High School production is usually a colourful, light-hearted musical which showcases the talents of drama students from years 7-11.
This year things are a little different.
Year 12 student Travis Cross has written a thought-provoking play which covers some quite mature themes.
Travis was realistic enough to know a musical simply wouldn’t do the script, or the subject matter, justice.
“There are important topics and very relevant for today,” said English and Drama teacher Darko Jovanovic.
Subjects such as bullying and homosexuality are tackled in a 1950s setting.
Stuck in the Middle is a story of love, friendship and the ongoing quest to fit-in.
Wondering how well the play will be received has everyone a little nervous.
“I had faith when Travis came to me with the script,” said Darko.
“If anyone can pull it off it’s this group.”
The current senior drama students are a talented, dedicated group and most of them have been studying drama since year nine.
Their mature approach to the production will be matched by the professional sound and lighting by Hamish McDonald of Aurora Show FX who has been hired for the two nights.
To prepare for next week’s performances the students have been staying behind on Friday afternoons and working through lunch breaks in order to work around their HSC commitments.
Travis not only wrote the play, but he also directs it, acts in it and helps out back stage. He also designed the set.
It will be his last production with the school before he graduates in 2018.
“It is undeniable the same talent people have come to expect from a Wingham High School production is still there,” said Darko.
Stuck in the Middle will be performed at the Wingham High School MPC at 7pm on Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24.
