Resuming on 5-36 after being set a total of 189 the week before, Wingham soon were on the back foot with Jaxson Longa caught at mid wicket for no score. Nathan Smith strode to the crease to join stand-in skipper RJ Shepherd still on his week-before score of 19. The pair grew in confidence with Nathan’s first two scoring shots boundaries, ably supported by RJ picking off singles and rotating the strike. With the score on 80, RJ was caught for 37, which was his highest score in junior cricket and a solid platform for his team to build on.
James Creighton then came to continue his good early-season form advancing the team total to 140 before being adjudged LBW for 26.
Lucas Payne then skied a few which fortunately landed safe to give his team-mates on the side-line palpitations (probably more so their parents) but settled down to form a partnership of 33 before his middle stump was knocked back.
With the score then on 173 and with only Dylan Mitchell left to bat, 16 runs were safely negotiated for the teams to be tied, with then a no-ball giving the team victory and the very next ball Dylan bowled for two. Nathan was not-out 69 in an excellent innings, which included 10 boundaries.
Special mention also to Oliver Irvine for being non-batter and helping out his team.
Next week the team plays Great Lakes at Muscio Park in a one-dayer. Perhaps a lucky win but one the players will accept.
