The 21-year-old is a second year carpentry apprentice with Marlee-based Altez Building Contractors.
“We are very, very proud of him,” said Allie Cross, co-owner of Altez with her husband Terry.
“He’s a hard worker and deserves this.”
Dylan is Allie and Terry’s only employee who first showed great potential when we was a student at Wingham High School.
He did a work experience placement with the couple.
“Terry knew then he was going to be good,” admits Allie.
A few years on and Dylan has become what is believed to be the only second year apprentice to win the coveted title of Apprentice of the Year.
Most winners are in their third year and therefore older.
Allie and Terry nominated Dylan for the award for which he was required to travel to Newcastle for a panel interview with the judges.
“It was a daunting experience for him but he handled it.”
Judges consider attitude to work, maturity, personal development and overall progress throughout the apprenticeship as well as such things as industry knowledge, communication skills and personal presentation.
Allie never doubted Dylan was a worthy candidate.
She credits Dylan’s family, including parents Michelle and Nic, for raising their son with good values and a strong work ethic.
As part of Dylan’s apprenticeship he also studies at Forster Tafe.
His work with Altez can be varied from frameworks to wardrobes on building projects including renovations, new builds as well as schools and pre-schools.
Dylan was presented with his award at Wests Newcastle on October 21 at the awards gala event.
His win means he will now represent the HIA Hunter region at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards in 2018.
Dylan and Terry will travel to Singapore – all expenses paid – for the chance to win the national title.
“We wish him all the very best of luck next year,” said Allie.
“Go champ.”
