The survey found 73 car spaces are currently available for all day parking in McCullagh Car Park behind Isabella Street which, the chamber suggests, is not being fully utilised by locals, visitors, shop keepers and their staff.
“These car spaces are available to anyone wanting to come to Wingham town,” chamber member Col Butcher said.
“Customers are driving around the street several times trying to find a spot. It is also costing business people money as the locals and visitors cannot park.”
The survey discovered there are currently 253 spaces available in Isabella and Bent Streets.
The chamber estimated that up to 45 car spots, or 18 per cent of total car spaces available, are occupied by business people and their staff at any one time.
“If these car spaces were to transfer to McCullagh Car Park a lot of the parking problem would be solved,” said Col.

“Many business owners are doing the right thing and to those people we say well done!”
Some of the reasons given by those surveyed for not parking on McCullagh Car Park were:
- Car parking not well sign posted
- Need surveillance cameras to monitor car park
- Upgrade walkways to car park
- Upgrade lighting in laneways and car park
- Reinstate shade sails to protect vehicles
- Roadworks needed to fix up pot holes to and in car park
- Maitland Lane needs to be re-tarred and upgraded
- Cars are parking in main streets and catching bus to Taree
Other feedback from the survey:
- More parking at rear of shops
- Controlled parking times
- Footpaths need to be upgraded and washed more frequently
- More disability spaces (currently three spaces)
- Lack of loading zones for trucks to unload
- Kelly Lane (Worthington Lane) park on one side only. This will give trucks better opportunities to unload
- Delete centre parking in Isabella Street and introduce angle parking from Bent Street to Primrose Street.
Some of the feedback related specifically to Wingham Memorial Services Club with respondents suggesting members be encouraged to use the rear parking instead of Bent Street parking. These responses related mostly to week days.
A total of 67 Wingham businesses responded to the chamber survey.
