When I looked at my calendar this week I noticed that tomorrow is marked as a day all world leaders should be thinking of and praying for. It is the International Day of Peace. Here’s hoping that my calendar is correct and all of us enjoy the concept for a long time to come but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime after all we’ve had lots of conflicts since the ‘war to end all wars,’ haven’t we?

Then I looked a few days further on and noticed that the Monday of the long weekend, September 25, says 13 weeks until Christmas. Where has this year gone? Poor old Santa must be working his fingers to the bone getting everything ready for his big night trip.
The local Red Cross Club wishes to say a big thank you to everyone who came along and made the last function such a success. We had visitors from four other clubs and branches join us for lunch and a few games at the hall on Tuesday September 12, and had a wonderful day despite the fact that at the last moment several of our members had managed to get the dreaded flu or some other illness which kept them away.
Many thanks to all who cooked for the luncheon. As usual there was food in abundance which we all enjoyed very much. It was wonderful to be back in the hall with such good friends for a day. We’ve booked the hall for December 12 for our Christmas function so please mark it on your calendar as school children are coming all the way across Borserio Drive to entertain us once again this year. We missed them last year but swimming classes were much more important for them I’m sure you’ll agree.
There will be a very exceptional meeting night at Lola Turner’s place at Tiri next Wednesday night. The Caffreys Flat Hall committee and also the Trust will be holding their AGMs. This has come about because of the flu hitting the district when there was a Trust meeting to be held and it has taken so long to get everyone well enough to go out at night that they are doing everything at the same gathering. After the elections, etc there will be a (hopefully) short committee meeting to set things back on track with hall business. Have you started thinking about your mask for the Halloween dinner dance they are holding at Mount George Hall in October?
To book your table for that night please ring Lola on 6550 7593 for catering purposes well in advance so you are sure of having a meal and a good night of dancing.
The roads have been very busy out our way with flashing blue and red lights as fire trucks whiz by to outbreaks in all directions. Many thanks to all brigades who have assisted ours in the lead up to fire season. Please check with fire headquarters in Taree before you decide to light up your burn, even if you have a permit, as the fire danger has been so high lately that all permits are often cancelled in the afternoons due to the height of the danger that you could find yourself in hot water if you do light up.
I noticed just how tired our brigade members are looking as during this type of weather they’ve been called out twice a day sometime to two different fires and quite often other brigades are needed to help so I guess it is the same everywhere.
The members who work at night and those unfortunate enough not to have a job do the day shift and the day workers do the night shifts when the pagers ring so neither get much rest. So many are suffering from the flu at present and members getting older constant call-outs take their toll.
Our brigade, and I’m sure most others are the same, could do with an influx of new, younger members so this vital work can carry on. If you feel you would be able to join up and even only go out to fires at weekends or when you aren’t working please consider doing so as it really makes you feel great to have helped someone by putting out a fire which could have developed into one like those you see on television all over the world and gives the others a break.
