After many years being involved with the Wingham juniors he and other long-time committee person, Alison Bird, have decided to step down from their executive roles leaving others in charge for the season ahead.
The new president is Dennis Smith, with Dave Abbott vice president and Joe Taylor taking up the secretarial role. Louise Smith continues on as treasurer, with Joe's wife Sarah the registrar, and minor but important roles filled by Narelle Barry and Colm McTaggart. It is a new but enthusiastic committee filled with quite a few fresh faces.
Early challenges will be implementing the new junior formats in the under 10 and under 12 age divisions. Shorter pitches, fewer players and quicker games aim to make the game more appealing to the new age of cricketers, while under 14 and under 16 games will remain the same.
This year there will be new initiatives of trying to introduce a mid-week junior twilight competition for those that can’t play on Saturday mornings, as well as a girls-only competition also mid-week.
Coaches are now being sought for all sides with nominations to be in to Joe on 0418 758983 by September 6, for the get-to-know-your-club day then to be held on September 9. If your child or someone you know would like to play any of these forms of cricket please contact Joe as well. If anyone would also like to “give-back” and join the committee also please go along to the next meeting on August 29 at 6pm at the Wingham Golf Club.
The club is looking forward to a great season. The kids are getting keen already!
