The outcome includes a far smoother and safer driving surface for Wingham motorists, who have witnessed the reconstruction of failed pavement areas taking place over past months.
The one kilometre stretch between Wynter and Farquhar Streets has undergone extensive excavation to replace the failing under-surface pavement layers of the road, with an outcome designed to cater for traffic for years to come.
Drainage works were also undertaken to minimise the future impact of water on the road pavement during rain events.
“This has been a significant project that’s been drawn out due to poor weather, but it’s important to understand the seal in place is only a temporary surface, and the job can’t be completed with its final seal and line-marking until the weather conditions are warmer,” Daniel Park, manager operations north said.
With a temporary seal in place, it’s business as usual for local motorists.
“The primer seal waterproofs the road surface until we’re able to apply the final seal, but in some cases heavy rain may cause pot-holing in this temporary surface – this doesn’t mean the road has failed, it’s an unfortunate inherent factor of the process,” Mr Park said.
Crews will revisit the site during spring or early summer to complete the road reconstruction works. Signage is currently in place reminding locals that the project is yet to be fully completed.
