What a busy last week of term it is for the pupils at the local school. Last Friday they hosted a full three course meal for a contingent of the members of Wingham Nursing Home and some invited guests from our own town of whom I was lucky enough to be one.
Preparation for the luncheon began long ago when the seeds for all the produce used to supply the meal were planted in the garden tended by the entire school population and some helpful parents. When everything was ready it was harvested, cleaned and then prepared for the table by the children and their parent and teacher helpers. Every pupil had a chance to be involved in some stage of the preparation of the menu which included a thick potato and leek soup as a starter., vegetable lasagne with roast beetroot and a crisp side salad and then a dessert of lime and orange individual cheesecakes accompanied by orange ice-cream frozen in quarter orange skins which had a ‘secret ingredient’ for us to try to guess (a little ginger was what it turned out to be). To cap the lunch off there was tea or coffee if required. The older class served us and the lower division pupils entertained us before the meal and sat amongst the visitors to eat and keep us further entertained with their chatter about home, school, gardening etc. It was a very enjoyable time which made me quite nostalgic. After lunch I felt I wanted to claim K 1 / 2 children and go into my old classroom for the afternoon.
On Monday the whole school attended the small school’s athletics carnival. On Wednesday, (today) the whole school is at Wingham Brush school for NAIDOC Day celebrations and then on Thursday it’s back to the garden program again plus taking home the dreaded reports for semester 1. Friday, if they wake up on time, they conclude the term with library which is not to strenuous. Then, of course it’s holiday time until Tuesday July 18. I hope they get some rest.
Over the holidays, Taree, Harrington and Old Bar libraries have activities planned for youngsters who are ‘bored.’ should you wish to take the opportunity to use this service feel free to ring the libraries and find out details.
The Reserve Trust meeting this Thursday night has had to be moved to next Thursday, July 6 due to unforeseen circumstances.
Saturday, August 26 is the Back to Mt George Festival. How are those billy carts coming along? Much fun guaranteed. Bring your family along. The P&C will be manning the Bunnings barbecue on Saturday, September 26 and need as many helpers as they can get there to raise money towards the end of year excursion and school camp. Give it some thought, please!
