Sharp, who now lives in Sydney, is a protege of Terry Simmons, who dominated the event in its early years in the 1980s. He has battled ill-health in recent years, although he has still be a regular in his home event. He won the champions for the first time in 1999.
This was also the second year the Waller has made the final. He led 2-1 after the first three frames but Sharp finished too strongly to claim the event, which was sponsored by the Taree-Midcoast Automotive Group.
The 2016 winner Hassan Kerdi couldn’t repeat his performance from last year, but claimed a record with a break of 131 in his second round game. This is the best in the event’s history. Kerdi also had breaks of 84 and 64 while Sharp’s best was 81. Kerdi was beaten by Sharp in the semi-final while Waller downed Terry Emmett in the other semi.
Harrington's Nick Henlan was the best performed local, making the quarter finals.
Club Taree Snooker and Billards Club president Roy Peisley said the event was one of the best conducted and he described the standard as ‘fantastic.’
“It was also great to see Michael winning it again,’’ he said.
