An ‘Activations Blitz Weekend’ is being held to bring some spectacular place making activations to life.
For the duration of the weekend, a series of activation activites will be run across the town centre.
What exactly the activities will be is still being decided with information gathered at the workshops held over the last month being compiled and shortlisted.
“The consultants will use the information they’ve gathered from the community and what the community wants to focus in on something that’s deliverable within the time frame,” Wingham Chamber of Commerce president Liz Jarvis said.
The community workshop, held on Thursday May 18, was similar to the workshop held for businesses on Wednesday April 26 and was well attended with 55 people taking part.
“I was very happy with the number that attended. It was a great mix of community. Only a handful of people who had been at the previous one were us people that had to be there and the rest were fresh faces,” Liz Jarvis said.
“It was interesting that similar things kept coming up - seating in the main street; trees in the main street, which is harder to implement; Historical things; nighttime lighting in the park – those things all came up again, which is great.”
Approximately 100 students from Wingham High School and Wingham Public School also participated in workshops.
The most popular ideas from these workshops were:
- Improvements to the skate park
- Pop-up cinema
- Giant trampoline
- Rollerskating rink
- Free Wifi in Isabella Street
To guide the Wingham community through the weekend, expert place makers, JOC Consulting will be on the ground to help deliver the community-designed activations.
The event is part of the formal engagement process for the Wingham Place Making Project and will help develop a Place Making Strategy for Wingham.
Further information and a schedule of events will be published closer to the weekend
