Championship round 400 metres May 13
The Club Championship year commenced May 13, at the 400-metre range. Members and several guests were treated to beautiful shooting conditions with light cloud cover, still winds and absolutely no mirage – a shooter’s heaven. The Club hosted a number of guests who were thrilled to be able to attend a ‘try shooting’ event.

After the end of the 2016/2017 competition year a few weeks ago, several club members have progressed to higher grades for this year. Notably Jim Blackmore, who is now competing as an A Grade shooter in Full Bore, and Christina Adams and Declan Heaney who are now A Grade competitors in the F Standard discipline.
Gordon Higgins shot two consecutive ‘pin holes’ and won both the Target Rifle C Grade event and the handicap match for the afternoon. Jim Blackmore took out his first win in Target Rifle A Grade with a blistering total of 98 with 12 centres. Barry White continues to shoot extremely well and was the winner of Target Rifle B grade with a score of 97 with 10 centres.
Phil Costa continues to dominate F Standard A grade with a score of 114 and six centres, however was chased by Christina Adams who posted a final total of 114 with four centres in the F Open division. Duncan Robinson shot a convincing 113 with 6 centres to take home the win in F Standard B Grade.
Next week shooting moves to the 500 metre range. Scores for the first round of competition were:
- Target Rifle A Grade: Jim Blackmore 98.12, Tony Moon 95.7, Mal McKenzie 48.3.
- Target Rifle B Grade: Barry White 97.10, Max Purnell 95.9 Adrian Newbery 47.3.
- Target Rifle C Grade: Gordon Higgins 87.6, Todd Barnard 82.1.
- F Open: Christina Adams 114.4.
- F Standard A Grade: Phil Costa 114.6, Tony Galati 111.2, Chris Barnard 107.2, Rob Bartlett 103.4.
- F Standard B Grade: Duncan Robinson 113.6, Suzie Laurie 105.5, Ronan Moon 99.3, Craig Laurie 81.
Club Championship round 500 yard May 20
Records tumble and perfect scores abound. Wonderful conditions and fierce competition was the order of the day at Wingham Rifle Club on Saturday for the first Club Championship round at the 500-yard range.
Jim Blackmore shot a first stage of 50.9 breaking the Club’s previous record at this distance in Target Rifle.
Tony Galati in F Class then posted a round of 60.7 breaking the Club’s record for F Class. Galati just edged out Christina Adams who shot a second stage of 60.5 in F Open to record her first perfect score at this distance.
The afternoon saw perfect scores shot across both disciplines, however the A Grade Target Rifle boys were on fire with Peter Thurtell, Steve Southwell and Jim Blackmore all posting double possible scores of 100 plus centres. Christina Adams, Phil Costa, Tony Galati and Declan Heaney all shot perfect scores in F Class.
Next Saturday Wingham Rifle Club will host shooters from the Mid North Coast District Rifle Association (DRA) in the Champion of Champion individual and DRA teams events. The Champion of Champion will see the best shooters from Gloucester, Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Wingham Rifle Clubs battle it out in both Target Rifle and F Class events.
This will then be followed by the DRA Team events. Target Rifle teams consist of five shooters while F Class teams shoot in pairs.
Final scores for Saturday’s matches were:
- Target Rifle A Grade: Steve Southwell 100.17, Jim Blackmore 100.17, Peter Thurtell 100.12, Tony Blackmore 97.9.
- Target Rifle B Grade: Chris Barnard 97.7, Lyndon Thurtell 89.9.
- Target Rifle C Grade: Forbes Thurtell 92.2, Gordon Higgins 88.3, Todd Barnard 86.1.
- F Open: Christina Adams 113.7.
- F Open A Grade: Phil Costa 119.8, Tony Galati 118.11, Declan Heaney 118.8, Rob Bartlett 106.3.
- F Standard B Grade: Duncan Robinson 115.6, Ronan Moon 114.6, Mike Rogerson 114.3, Ean Heaney 113.6, Connor Latham 102.1, Craig Laurie 98.1, Suzi Laurie 89.1.
- Duncan Robinson was the winner of the afternoon’s handicap match.
