Referring to Ron Spriggs’ article about the history of Wingham Swimming Pool, there was also a swimming club which was started by Fred Prout, who was the pool manager at that time. He started the Wingham Waders in 1972.

This club taught preschoolers to swom, or at least taught them water safety. Also, if their mothers could not swim, we helped them too.
I joined the club and was secretary for six years. We would meet Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 12pm.
We held a swimathon every year to raise money for charities. The water ballet usually encouraged more of an audience, meaning more money spent at the shop.
There were quite a few members; some still keep in touch so we can get together for lunch occasionally.
The club lasted for 10 years. When it was closed for winter we would go to Tinonee to play tennis.
A lot of children benefited going to the Waders and later on joining the Wingham Swimming Club.
Because there is a river running through our town it is important that kids are taught water safety. If the pool has to be moved, let’s hope it will be replaced, as if last summer was anything to go by, people can at least get cooler at the pool.
It would be a terrible thing to lose our swimming pool – so many people enjoy it so much.
