The nine-year-old local joined Wingham Swimming Club this year and has already broken three club records.
On March 1 she broke the girls seven/eight year 25 metre backstroke record with a time of 25.94 seconds, and the 25 metre butterfly record in a time of 23.20 seconds.
She backed up those record-breaking swims with breaking the club’s girls seven/eight year 25 metre freestyle record on March 8 with a time of 18.18 seconds.
For two years running Eva competed at school zone swimming carnivals representing Wingham Public School, winning the junior girls 50m butterfly. This year she also swam second in junior girls 50m freestyle.
Apart from competing in school swimming carnivals Eva has only competed in one carnival at Wingham.
Breaking records within the club this year has understandably given the young swimmer confidence, and she now plans to enter more carnivals next year.
In addition to this she also plans to increase her training schedule next season.
Eva started swimming lessons as a one-year-old at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
After the family moved north, Eva commenced stroke development with Narelle Foy in Wingham. She outgrew Narelle’s pool and now is attending squad training with Ron Spriggs, head coach YMCA Taree and Wingham.
Eva’s mum Joanne Abbott said she is letting Eva drive her schedule.
“I’m proud of her and excited to know how far she will take it,” Joanna said.
“She had a great start because she had the AIS, and then Narelle, and now Ron. And he’s been great – he just gets a good rapport with the kids and makes it fun.”
