Aus Eco Landscaping Supply’s Kerrie Robertson-Guppy and Oscar-winning cinematographer and Bootawa resident Jim Frazier ASC OAM have teamed up to bring the Scouts organisation and the Symphony of the Earth organisation together in a joint project.
Kerrie is developing a ‘Symphony of the Earth’ badge for the 1st Wingham Scouts Cubs, with plans to extend the badge to the Scouting movement internationally.
Jim Frazier, founder and chairman of the not-for-profit environmental organisation Symphony of the Earth contacted Kerrie as he wanted her help getting youth involved as ambassadors for Symphony of the Earth.
The organisation is a platform for Jim’s film and music project of the same name, with which he aims to “bring about a global shift in consciousness and awareness through the music and voices of humans in concert with the creatures of the earth.”
“Jim said he wanted me to come up with a plan for engaging the youth of the world,” Kerrie said.
She shared her involvement with scouting with Jim at their first meeting at the Garden Grub.
“Kerrie embraced it when I explained the whole concept,” Jim said.
“And that’s where I had the idea,” Kerrie said.
“Symphony of the Earth + Scouting = conservation or environment badge.
“Scouting is the largest youth organisation in the world, but it’s also the largest peace organisation in the world as well,” Kerrie said.
“So that’s why Scouts are now doing a badge and very big promotion around youth as the messengers of peace. It fits perfectly with what Symphony’s all about. We’ve got to stop having wars with each other, and save the planet.”
At this early stage in the badge’s development, it will be used as a camp blanket badge, and later, when it is more established, an achievement badge.
To earn the badge the Cubs will be exploring themes around local endangered animals – the Manning River Turtle and the Grey-headed Flying Fox – through art, music, writing, photography, video, and nature.
Through these activities they will earn an achievement badge for the activity of their choice, in conjunction with the first ever special camp blanket ‘Symphony of the Earth’ badge.
The Symphony of the Earth badge program will run over two Tuesday nights beginning March 14.
