“The Centenary of Anzac projects so successfully undertaken have raised some very positive debate about modern service issues and the wider nature of our defence activities, including peace keeping, disaster assistance and humanitarian interventions “, said Sub-branch treasurer, Brian Willey.
“This is a complex area, but, as guardians of the Honour Rolls, we recognise many of our local youth enlist, serve and do not return to their hometown or district for many years, if at all. Our workforce and the community are much more mobile these days.”
Sub-branch Committee member Terry Gould spoke about the approach being taken during the review.
“We are now designing procedures to process any applications we receive from past or serving members. They do not have to be RSL members. Nor do they have to be returned from active service veterans,” Terry said.
“Generally they have to have satisfactorily completed a period of service that would qualify them to wear the Australian Defence Medal.
“Additionally they would also need to have an enduring attachment to Wingham and the upper Manning. Broadly this area relates to Postcode 2429. It would not necessarily be crucial to have been born here. “All applications will be treated on their merits and in full confidentiality,” Terry said.
If you, or someone you know, appear to fit these broad requirements contact Brian Willey on 0428 258 823, Terry Gould on 0490 176 926 or Ian Martin (secretary) on winghamrslsubbranch9@gmail.com.
