The Wingham Beef Week committee came up with the idea of a charity steer as a way of giving back to the community.
“Westpac is close to the heart of many locals who have been unfortunate enough to have had to use this service,” Wingham Beef Week president Paul Relf said.
This year’s steer was donated by Mark Burke, Burke and Sons, Summerset.
Burke and Sons operate a large Wagyu Angus cross commercial operation selling cattle to live export and feeder steers into feedlots.
Wagyu beef is highly renowned for its high eating quality.
The steer is currently being prepared on grain donated by Ridley’s Taree and will then be slaughtered at Wingham Beef Exports who will cover the cost of slaughter.
Scott Kelly of Wingham Gourmet Meats has donated his services to prepare the meat to be boxed ready for the auction.
The auction of the meat will be held in conjunction with the live auction of steers at Wingham Showground, 11am Thursday May 18.
The 30th annual Wingham Beef Week will be held May 15-20.
